Lady Broncos down BYU Hawaii 78-71 late Wednesday night

HONOLULU -- The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos have been searching for their first victory to the 2010-11 basketball season.

They found it 4,777 miles from home.

Tierra Coleman (So., Cameron, NC) had career-highs with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the defending CIAA Champion Lady Broncos to a 78-71 victory over BYU-Hawaii on the first day of the Hoop N Surf Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night in Honolulu. The game did not finish until after 1 a.m. on the east coast.

Tiffany Haywood (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) enjoyed her fourth double-double of the season after collecting 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds in the victory for Fayetteville State (1-5). Capricia Smalls (McLeansville, NC) added 13 points and six rebounds while LaQuasha Jordan (Jr., Greenville, NC) chipped in 10 points to go with a game-high five steals and four assists. Dasnii Curtis (Fr., Fayetteville, NC) had nine points.

The Lady Broncos shot a season-high 44 percent from the field in the victory and also shot a season-high 76 percent (19-for-25) from the foul line. Fayetteville State led 41-35 at the half.

Richelle Rieben led BYU Hawaii (2-9) with 12 points while Danna Lynn Hooper had 11 and Hi'ilei Cummings had 10. Fayetteville State, which held a whopping 52-25 edge in rebounding, also held BYU Hawaii to just 35 percent shooting from the floor and forced 23 turnovers.

The Lady Broncos now turn their focus to Thursday's game against Hawaii Pacific, which will tip off at 2:30 p.m. Hawaiian time and 7:30 p.m. on the east coast.
