Emporia State 70, Northwest Missouri State 65

EMPORIA, Kan. — Xavier Burnette and Adam Holthaus scored 16 points each to lead Emporia State to a 70-65 win against Northwest Missouri State Wednesday at White Auditorium in the MIAA opener for both teams.

DeShaun Cooper’s game-high 19 points led four Northwest players in double figures. Dillon Starzl went 6-of-6 from the field and had 12 points. Elijah Allen finished with 11 points and Shaneel Narayan had 10 for the Bearcats (2-3).

The Hornets (4-3) took a 30-23 lead into halftime and never trailed in the second half. Emporia State’s lead fluctuated between four and nine points during the final 20 minutes.

The Hornets scored 16 points off 11 Northwest turnovers and committed a season-low six turnovers themselves. Emporia State also made 16-of-20 free throws.

Burnette had seven rebounds and six assists to go with his 16 points. Cooper had six assists, four rebounds and two steals in addition to his 19 points.

Northwest’s first four conference games will be played on the road. The Bearcats are next in action Saturday at Washburn.
