Clayton State’s Sayon selected NSCAA Division II All-Southeast Region for women’s soccer

Laker senior forward earns honor for second straight season

MORROW, Ga. – December 7, 2010 – The NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) 2010 Division II All-Southeast Region team for women’s soccer was released on Tuesday, and Clayton State’s Cherie Sayon was honored as a third team NSCAA Division II All-Southeast Region selection. The All-Region team consists of players from the Peach Belt Conference, South Atlantic Conference and Conference Carolinas.

A senior forward from Monrovia, Liberia, Sayon earns the All-Region honor for a second straight season, becoming the fifth Laker player in program history to earn All-Region in multiple seasons. She joins Nkiru Okosieme (2001, 2002, 2004), Judith Chime (2004, 2005), Olaitan Yusuf (2004, 2005, 2007) and Nkese Udoh (2005, 2006) on that level. In addition to this NSCAA honor, Sayon was also recognized this season as a Daktronics Division II All-Southeast Region selection.

Sayon enjoyed another banner year offensively for the Lakers, earning Peach Belt Conference co-Player of the Year honors. She finished tied for third in the Peach Belt in goals scored with 13 and ranked fourth in points scored with 30. Sayon finished her career ranked fourth at Clayton State in goals with 27 and fourth in points scored with 59.

The highlight of Sayon’s season came in Clayton State’s home opener against Brevard in which she scored four goals, just missing tying the Laker single-game mark by one goal. She also scored two goals against West Georgia, including the game-winner in overtime, and also scored the game-winning goal against Flagler, USC Aiken and Georgia Southwestern.
