Catawba takes league-opener 81-62 against C-N

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba used a 50-27 rebounding advantage and balanced scoring to post an 81-62 win over visiting Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Eagles fall to 2-5, and 0-1.

Carson-Newman scored the first basket, but after a jumper by Stuart Thomson (Poynton, ENGLAND/Poynton) and two free throws by Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) at the 17:47 mark the Indians would lead the rest of the way. A 14-0 run, capped by a pair of three-pointers by Chris Tyree (Rocky Mount, VA/Franklin Co. HS), saw Catawba build a 24-8 lead at the midpoint of the half.

The Eagles got as close as nine on a three-pointer by Ishmael Sanders (Cleveland, TN), but Catawba would use another run to pull away by the break. Ten straight points, which included three-pointers by Keon Moore (Colerain, NC/Bertie HS) and Cameron Lovelace (Cherryville, NC/Cherryville HS/N. Florida), had the Indians up 43-24. The Indians never let Carson-Newman get closer than 16 points in the second half.

Martin led five Catawba players in double figures with 12 points. Had added five rebounds, five assists, and blocked three shots. Thomson, Lovelace, Tyree and Moore all chipped in with 10 points. Moore led the team with eight rebounds. Collin Crane (Knoxville, TN) and Brandon Evans (Salem, VA) led Carson-Newman with 10 points apiece. Evans added five blocks and grabbed five rebounds.

The Indians had 19 offense rebounds of its total of 50, while Carson-Newman pulled down six on the offensive glass. Catawba also went 19-of-22 at the line with the Eagles making only four of their 14 attempts at the stripe.
