WALTHAM, Mass. -- For the second time in three weeks, Bentley University freshman forward Lauren Battista (North Easton/Oliver Ames HS) has been selected as the Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week.
It’s the third straight week that a Falcon freshman has collected the honor. Last week, in between Battista’s two selections, Jacqui Brugliera (Fitchburg/Wachusett Reg. HS) was the honoree.
Battista, playing against her hometown team for the first time, established a new career scoring high with 20 points to propel Bentley to its sixth straight victory, 78-63 over Stonehill College. She made seven of 11 shots overall, including a three-pointer, and sank five of seven from the line. In addition, the six-footer provided seven rebounds (including four at the offensive end), a block, a steal and an assist in 26 productive minutes.
A starter in all seven games for the 6-1 Falcons, Battista is second on the team in scoring (11.7 average) and third in rebounds (4.7 per game). Her .582 field goal percentage is tied for second in the NE-10 and her 13 steals is tied for the team-high.
Battista, after opening the season with three consecutive eight-point games, has averaged 14.5 points on 66 percent shooting over the last four contests.
Bentley is back in action on Sunday with a 2 pm home encounter with C.W. Post.
