COLUMBIA, N.C.—Freshman Rachel Hewitt (Kokomo, Ind.) led St. Andrews Presbyterian College with 12 points in the squad’s season-opener but host Allen University rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to take Wednesday’s contest by a final score of 67-56.
The Yellow Jackets (2-5) held the Lady Knights (0-1) to just one made field goal in the first 13 minutes and 51 seconds of the second half before holding on for the 11-point victory.
Hewitt scored nine of her team-high 12 points on a trio of three-pointers. Hewitt also dished out a game-high four assists.
SAPC started five newcomers – three freshmen and two transfers – with the quintet accounting for 51 of the Knights 56 points. Junior Rebecca Bryant (Cincinnati, Ohio), sophomore Kimayah Fulcher (New Bern, N.C.), and freshman Ariel Reaves (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) all scored 10 points in their Royal Blue and White debut. Fulcher and freshman Natalie Whitman (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) both just missed recording double-doubles. Whitman corralled a game-high 10 boards and tallied nine points while Fulcher added nine rebounds.
Allen led for a total of 24 seconds in the first half as the Knights dominated play over the first 20 minutes. St. Andrews broke a 15-15 tie midway through the period with a 7-0 run that was capped by a fast break layup by sophomore Beneé Norton (Atlanta, Ga.). SAPC held its largest lead of seven a total of three times in the first half including the final time on a sophomore Tyler Knight (Greenville, N.C.) five-footer at the 5-minute mark.
The Yellow Jackets closed the gap to four, 30-26, at halftime as Deveney Guillory got an offensive rebound and made her only field goal attempt as time expired. Allen scored 18 of its 67 points on 20 offensive rebounds.
St. Andrews stayed ahead for the first three and a half minutes of the second half but Whitman’s made jumper at the 17:37 mark would be the Knights only field goal for a long time. SAPC would not make another shot from the floor for over 11 minutes until Hewitt drained her third trey of the game with 6:09 showing on the scoreboard.
Allen outscored St. Andrews 26-12 over the first 14 minutes and was able to hold on by shooting 44-percent in the second half compared to 28% by the Knights. The Yellow Jackets finished the contest firing at 38.4% accuracy while SAPC shot 32.2%.
Bryant filled up the box score by swishing 10 points including two 3-pointers, hauling in six rebounds, making a game-high three steals, swatting two blocks, and handing out two assists.
Kendra McMichael scored 12 of her game-high 15 points in the second stanza to lead Allen to the come-from-behind victory. A trio of Yellow Jackets had eight rebounds as Allen won the battle of the boards, 43-40.
