WBB: NNU 78, Dominican 54

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — The Dominican University of cCalifornia women’s basketball team fell to 0-3 on the young season with Friday night’s 78-54 loss to Northwest Nazarene University in the first night of the Wildcat Classic hosted by Central Washington University.

Dominican senior Kelsey Janusch got the Lady Penguins off to a good start with a three-pointer to open the game but that would be the only Dominican bucket for the next six minutes. The Crusaders used that to their advantage, establishing a 16-3 lead before senior center Raquel Gomes laid it in for the Lady Penguins. By halftime it was the Crusaders ahead 45-22. The Lady Penguins played nearly even in the second half but by then the damage had been done.

Dominican continued to shoot the ball from deep, making 3-of-7 (.429) attempts. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to offset NNU’s 39-24 dominance on the boards that included 17 Crusader offensive rebounds.

Janusch led all players with 18 points on 5-of-7 shooting and a perfect 7-of-7 night at the free throw line. Senior forward Shawna Bryant, junior guard Taki Te Koi, and sophomore forward Melissa Wise all added six points apiece in the loss. Bryant led the team and was one of three players in the game with six rebounds.

Four Crusaders reached double digit scoring as NNU earned its first victory of the season. Beth Johnson and Briaunna King each poured in 14 points apiece. The Crusaders got a dozen points from Chelsie Luke and Heather Adams chipped in 11 points.

The Lady Penguins will look for their first victory of the season on Saturday when they face tournament host Central Washington at 7:00 p.m.
