Three new modern era records for Grizzly men at Colorado Mines Tri-Meet

Freshmen Max Berumen and Jared Machado combined to set three modern era ASC records Saturday

GOLDEN, Colo. - Returning to competition for the first time in over a month on Saturday, the Adams State men's swimming team was in action at the Colorado Mines Tri-Meet for a pair of duals where the Grizzlies set three modern era school records and were led by second-place finishes from Max Berumen (Lafayette, Ind.) in the 200 yard individual medley and freshman Jared Machado (Castle Rock, Colo.) in the 100 yard butterfly.

With only three swimmers in action for the double dual against host and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) member Colorado Mines as well as Colorado College, the Grizzlies struggled in the team competition but saw personal records set in four the six events that ASC swimmers competed in. In the men's dual with Colorado College, ASC fell by 109-11, and fell to the Orediggers for the second time this season by a 113-11 tally.

The Grizzlies' women's swimming team was also in action in Golden on Saturday, where three school records were broken.

Berumen's 200 IM time of 2 minutes and 18.74 seconds not only came in more than a full second under his previous best, but established a new modern era Adams State record in the event, as it was 14/100ths of a second faster than the time established by redshirt-freshman Cody Robson (Athens, Texas) at the Intermountain Shootout hosted by Mesa State on Oct. 9. In addition, Berumen clocked a new PR and bettered his own modern era school record in the 100 free. After a record-setting time of 56.18 seconds in the event at the Adams State Duals on Oct. 2, Berumen smashed that mark with a time of 53.93 seconds on Saturday.

The short-handed Grizzlies squad established one more modern era school record on the day, as freshman Taylor Rousell (Port Orchard, Wash.) bettered his own mark in the 50 free, set at the Adams State Duals, shaving .05 seconds off his time and placing fourth in the event with in 23.65 seconds.

Machado's second-place showing in the 100 fly with a time of 1:05.48 was over three seconds faster than his previous best in the event.

The Grizzly will men will continue their first season in four decades when they head to Grand Junction, Colo., for the second time this season to swim at the Mesa State Invitational on Dec. 4-5.
