SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – Senior Jabril Bailey scored a team-high 20 points Saturday night in a losing effort as the Slippery Rock University men's basketball team dropped a 61-54 decision to Alderson-Broaddus College in second-night action of the PSAC/WVIAC Challenge hosted by Shepherd College.
The loss was the second in as many nights for SRU (0-2), which will seek its first win of the season Friday, Nov. 19, when it hosts Ohio University Eastern in a 7 p.m. game in Morrow Field House.
Bailey, who scored 21 points Friday night in the season-opening 83-70 loss to Shepherd, was one of two Rock players to finish with a double-digit scoring total in Saturday's game. Senior Maron Brown <http://www.rockathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5108> had 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to record his second "double-double" in as many games. Brown had 19 points and 15 rebounds Friday night.
Behind Brown's lead, The Rock enjoyed a 45-35 advantage in rebounds, but The Rock committed 17 turnovers for the second straight night. SRU forced Alderson-Broaddus into only six mistakes Saturday after causing seven turnovers in Friday night's loss.
SRU also shot a cold 36.7% (19-52) from the field Saturday night, with a frigid 15.4% (2-13) effort from 3-point range. The Rock hit 66.7% (14-21) of its free throws.
Alderson-Broaddus, meanwhile, shot only 35% (21-6) from the field, including a 13% (3-23) reading from beyond the arc, and hit 64% (16-25) of its free throws.
Nate Barnes scored a game-high 28 points for the Battlers (2-0).
SRU held a nine-point (20-11) lead with 11 minutes left in the first half, but was outscored by a 15-4 margin in the final part of the opening half as Alderson-Broaddus held a 26-24 lead at halftime.
The Rock rebounded to hold a five-point lead on four different occasions in the final 20 minutes of action, but were outscored by 15-3 margin down the stretch after holding a 51-46 lead with 4:30 left.
Alderson-Broaddus scored eight of the final nine points in the game after the score was tied for the 10th time at 53-53 with two minutes remaining.
Following Friday's game, The Rock embarks on a five-game road trip before hosting Ohio University Eastern again on Dec. 29 (3 p.m. tipoff). Grove City College comes calling the following night for a 7 p.m. backyard battle.
