Mars Hill Wins Season Opener at King

BRISTOL, Tenn. - King College lost Saturday as Mars Hill College left the Student Center with an 84-75 decision over the Lady Tornado basketball squad. The Lions improve to 1-0. King went to 1-1 after the meeting.

The lead changed hands three times in the first five-plus minutes of the game. King did own a five-point advantage, 11-6, thanks to a pair of free throws by Derika Mooney. She would go on to lead all scorers with 20 points. Mooney also had nine rebounds and five assists.

Mooney tied the game with a three pointer at 14 each after Mars Hill scored eight straight points.

The contest was tied again at 20-20 at the midpoint of the half and then King went on a 17-7 scoring spurt in the next five minutes. Deans had four of the Lady Tornado points with the final six coming via three pointers by Mooney and Jana Gross.

Mars Hill answered with 10 straight in a three-minute span. Eventually King took a 45-42 lead to the locker room at halftime.

The lead stayed with King for the first five minutes of the second half until Mars Hill tied things at 50. The lead changed hands three times in the next five minutes with two points being the largest advantage in the span.

The teams battled for the next four minutes until two free throws from Tyler Carlson put Mars Hill in front for good with 6:25 left in the game. Her first free throw broke a 65-65 tie. From there the visitors built a lead that grew to as many as 11 in the final minute.

Ashley Deans finished the game with 14 points and was a rebound away from a double-double. Sophomore Cheyenne Thornsberry poured in a career-best 13 points.

Mars Hill was 31-for-59 (52.5 percent) at the end of the game. The Lions hit seven long-range shots.

The Lions were led by Brittini Young with 19 points and six assists. Carlson added 18 points and five assists. Jocelyn Williams finished the game with a dozen points and 10 rebounds, seven of which were offensive rebounds.

The rebounding category was won by Mars Hill 41-35. Mars Hill had a 16-11 lead in second-chance points.

The Lions will travel to Lander on Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
