Mars Hill roars past Lees-McRae, 100-87

MARS HILL, N.C. - Donterious Hughes scored a team-high 20 points for Mars Hill which used a spurt in the second half to pull away from Lees-McRae, 100-87, in the Lions' home opener at Stanford Arena. Mars Hill improves to 1-1 overall. The Bobcats drop to 0-1.

The Lions led by seven points five minutes into the game off an old-fashioned three-point play by Randolph Howell. Mars Hill led by as many as nine points in the first half off a jumper by Tarron Stewart.

Lees-McRae anwered with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 32-32 at the 3:09 mark. Tevin Friday had two buckets during the stretch, and the Bobcats gained a 38-35 advantage with 2:29 remaining in the first frame when Daniel Sepokas drilled a trey.

Mars Hill rallied down the stretch and led by three points, 43-40, at halftime off a shot from behind the arc by Marshall Adams.

The Lions opened the second half with a 7-2 run in the span of 1:31. Steven Gatkuoth scored five points in that stretch, highlighted by a monstrous one-handed dunk as part of an old-fashioned three-point play.

Leading 58-57 with 14:42 left in the game, Mars Hill went on a 13-0 spurt to put the game out of reach. Dion Malachi had five points in the run, including a two-handed throw down as part of a three-point play.

The Lions led by as many as 22 points, 94-72, with just under four minutes left in the game off a dunk by Malachi, who finished the game with 15 points.

Adams scored 12 points in the game and was 3-3 from three-point range. Gatkuoth tallied 11 points in his debut for the Lions.

Friday and Reshon Benjamin each poured in a game-high 21 points for Lees-McRae. Sepokas had 17 points.

Mars Hill was 5-7 from distance, while the Bobcats were 8-26. The Lions forced 13 steals compared to only eight by Lees-McRae.

Mars Hill will travel to Mount Olive for the Pickle Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Lions will battle Chowan on Friday at 5 p.m. Mars Hill will take on Mount Olive on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
