Hoggies Fall Short

ADA, OKLAHOMA – Texas A&M-Kingsville and the East Central University men’s basketball teams went back-and-forth the entire second half, but it was the home team that ended up on top 53-49 in Lone Star Conference cross over action on Saturday.

The Javelinas (2-3) trailed 22-15 at halftime, but bounced back in the second half.  They took a 44-41 lead on a three-pointer by Mark Stevenson (South Bend, IN/Chabot College) with 2:56 left in the game, but then the Tigers (4-1) scored the next seven points to take a four point lead with 34 seconds left in the game.

The Javelinas tied the game eight seconds later thanks to a pair of free throws by Stevenson and a three-pointer from Marcus Ford (Colorado Springs, CO/Mesa Ridge HS) after ECU split a pair of free throws.

The Tigers reclaimed the lead when Antwone Snead drew a foul with 21 seconds remaining and made 1-of-2 from the line.  The Hoggies missed a potential go-ahead bucket with 15 seconds left, but still had one more chance to tie the game, but Ford’s three-point try was off the mark.

The Javelinas shot 33.9 percent from the field, made 3-of-19 three-point attempts and were 8-for-12 at the foul line.  Ford and Adam Morris (Goliad/Goliad HS) each had nine points to lead the team.  The Hoggies forced 22 turnovers and committed only nine, but were out rebounded 43-23 by the Tigers.

The Tigers shot 40.0 percent from the field, made 2-of-9 from three-point range and were 23-of-31 from the foul line.  Jamal Edwards led all players with 15 points and seven boards while Denarius Darby had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  Snead finished the game with 14 rebounds.

The Javelinas are back in action on Monday night at 7 p.m. at St. Edward’s University.
