NEW ORLEANS- After winning a fourth straight NCAA Division II Central Regional Championship last weekend in Wayne, Neb., the Adams State College women's cross country team regained the top spot in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's NCAA Division II National Rankings and will enter the Dec. 4 national championship meet as the favorites to win an eight straight title, according to Wednesday's announcement released by the organization.
The Grizzlies, who have been ranked first in 30 of the last 38 national polls dating back to the start of 2007, went into the regional championships ranked third in the country but upended former No. 2 Western State, 45-48, while surpassing both the Mountaineers and Grand Valley State (Mich.), which moved down a spot despite winning a 10th straight Midwest Region title by 53 points.
Meanwhile, Western State, which was also ranked first in the Central Region going into the meet, slipped two spots to No. 4 in the new national rankings following No. 3 Shippensburg (Pa.), which moved up a spot after winning the Atlantic Region title.
West region champion Alaska-Anchorage continues to round out the top five while Augustana (S.D.), which finished a solid third at the Central Regional meet made one of the biggest jumps in the rankings moving up four spots to a season-best sixth.
Chico State (Calif.), Ferris State (Mich.), Pittsburg State (Kan.) and Mary (N.D.) round out the top 10.
The Grizzlies will be gunning for their record-extending 16th NCAA Division II and 19th overall national title on Dec. 4 in Louisville, Ky.
The Grizzly men, who will be looking for a third straight and record-matching eighth NCAA Division II national crown, also retained their No. 1 national ranking and have now been ranked atop the nation for 29 straight polls dating back to 2008.
