Gannon Women's Volleyball Holds Steady in Fifth Spot of Atlantic Region Rankings

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women’s volleyball team held onto the fifth spot for the third straight week in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings released Wednesday afternoon.

NCAA Tournament participants are determined by the final NCAA regional rankings, released on Sunday, November 14. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) and Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) champions receive automatic bids. The next five teams in the final regional rankings will receive at-large bids to complete the eight team field.

Clarion (24-3, 23-3) takes over the top spot in the region after defeating previous No. 1 Edinboro during last week’s action. Edinboro (24-3, 21-3) now occupies the second position followed by California (Pa.) (19-9, 19-6), Wheeling Jesuit (25-4, 22-2) and Gannon (18-8, 17-8) to round out the top five.

Lock Haven (16-9, 15-8), Indiana (Pa.) (20-10, 19-9), Mercyhurst (16-11, 16-11), Kutztown (18-9, 18-9) and Shippensburg (16-15, 16-14) round out the ten teams.

Gannon finished the weekend 1-1, after dropping a five-set thriller to California (Pa.) (3-2) on Friday before taking care of IUP (3-1) on Saturday.

Gannon holds a 7-7 record against regionally ranked teams this season. The Lady Knights will continue a long homestand to close out the 2010 regular season, taking on Clarion on Friday, November 5 and Slippery Rock on Saturday, November 6. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
