EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior forward Jessica Frantz scored both goals to set East Stroudsburg University’s single-season scoring record as the No. 4-ranked Warriors finished the regular season with a 2-1 win over No. 7 Millersville on Saturday afternoon at Whitenight Field.
Frantz scored with 1:28 left in the first half, then recorded her 10th game-winning goal and school record-setting 30th goal of the season with just over 22 minutes left in the game. She breaks the record of 29 goals set by Ashley Kocis, an All-American and the national player of the year in 2006. Freshman forward Brielle Kessel had her second assist of the year on the first goal and Amanda McGuire set up the second goal.
The Warriors (16-4, 6-2) hit the 16-win mark for the fourth time in school history and the first time since 2001. They will face No. 1 Shippensburg (20-0) in the PSAC semifinals on Friday at Bloomsburg and are also expected to be in line for a second straight trip to the NCAA Division II Playoffs.
ESU avenged a 1-0 loss at Millersville on Oct. 16 which ended a school-record 11-0 start to the 2010 season. Emily Woodland scored the game’s only goal in that contest and scored 7:02 into the second half on Saturday to tie the game at 1-1 before Frantz’s record-setting goal won it for the Warriors.
ESU recognized its eight seniors before the game – Katie Anderson, Caitlin Brownley, Kayla Cilenti, Kira Edelman, Angela and Jessica Frantz, Brittany Kocis and Jennifer Mullen – a group that has the potential to host a first round game in the NCAA Tournament.
All eight were in the starting lineup, with Mullen getting the call in goal and making three saves in 18 minutes. Junior Maureen Ordnung played the final 52 minutes and made five saves. ESU held a 13-11 advantage in shots in the game and both teams took 12 penalty corners.
The four-team field for the PSAC semifinals will be set later today after the results of two afternoon games in the PSAC West. Bloomsburg is the host as the No. 1 seed in the PSAC East, ESU is the No. 2 seed in the division and Shippensburg is the top seed in the western division.
