Felician Athletes Raise $1K for Cancer Sufferers

Golden Falcons Take Part In Breast Cancer Awareness Month Events

            RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Three Felician College athletic teams combined to raise more than $1,000 for breast cancer research in separate events last month.

                    The volleyball team sponsored a “Dig For A Cure” night during its home match against Caldwell College on Oct. 18. Through soliciting donations at the door, as well as the sale of breast cancer awareness-themed T-shirts and bracelets, the Golden Falcons raised $360. The proceeds will benefit a local chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

            On Oct. 24, the Felician baseball and softball teams joined forces to participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K Walk at Bergen Community College. The squads raised $645 in pledges for the American Cancer Society. The Golden Falcons were part of 5,000 walkers who brought in $546,000 at the event.

            “I’d like to thank everyone who generously supported our student-athletes in these worthy endeavors,” said Lori Kwiatkowski, Felician’s assistant athletics director and softball coach. “Special thanks goes out to Susana Tempel from the payroll office, and her family, who participated in the walk with us.”

            Felician is a member of NCAA Division II and plays in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

            October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women ages 15-54. More than 200,000 new cases will be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2010.
