Cannell, Romig Named Academic All-District

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville football team had a pair of defensive linemen named First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI on Thursday.  Sophomores James Cannell (El Campo/El Campo HS) and Matt Romig (Bells/Bells HS) each garnered the award.

        Cannell and Romig now advance to the national ballot and are eligible for Academic All-America honors as voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  To be eligible for the award a student-athlete must have completed at least two semesters at their institution and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30.

        Cannell is a backup defensive tackle and boasts a 3.91 grade point average in Accounting, the highest of any defensive player on the District VI First Team.  He has made seven tackles this year and has 1.5 sacks to go along with one pass break up.

        Romig is a starting defensive end for the Javelinas and has a 3.40 grade point average in Electrical Engineering.  He leads the team with 6.0 sacks and is tied for the team lead with 8.0 tackles for loss.  He has 20 tackles and has forced two fumbles on the season.  He recorded a career high 3.5 sacks in a season opening win at #1 Northwest Missouri State en route to being named the Lone Star Conference South Division Defensive Player of the Week.

        The Javelinas are in action on Saturday night at home against #19 Midwestern State at 7 p.m.
