Bustos breaks ASC Division II career scoring mark as Grizzlies throttle Spartans

Kruger leads Adams State with career-best 21 points, four ASC starters reach double-digits

PUEBLO, Colo. - One night after setting a new Adams State Division II era (1992/93-present) single-game scoring record, senior guard Vera Jo Bustos became the career scoring leader in Adams State D-II history with late in the first half Sautrday evening as the Grizzlies cruised to their fifth straight win by a score of 80-56 over the University of Dubuque (Iowa) in their final game at the 2010 Colorado State-Pueblo Chuck Stephens Classic inside Massari Arena.

Bustos entered Saturday just four points shy of the previous record of 1,378 points set by Megan Hoffman (2001-05) and tallied 10 points against the Spartans, to bring her career total to 1,384 points and counting.

Adams State (5-1) has gone 2-0 at their second straight tournament this season and scored 80 points or more for the fourth straight game. The Grizzlies have won their five games by an average of more than 21 points. Dubuque drops to 1-3 on the season after going 0-2 in Chuck Stephens Classic play.

After Bustos scored a career-best 36 points in the Grizzlies overtime victory on Friday, the senior came out cold on Saturday, missing her first three shots of the game, and was scoreless with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

But Bustos hit 3-of-4 shots from the field to finish the opening half. After scoring her first basket of the game with 6 minutes and 18 seconds before the break, she tied the record with 5:10 to go and became the D-II era career scoring leader with 3:28 left in the first half.

The Spartans played CSU-Pueblo tough in a 70-60 loss on Friday night and threatened to keep things close with the Grizzlies. Mollie Whiting, who led the Division III member school with 18 points, hit a jumper to pull Dubuque within five points with 9:07 left in the first half. But Adams State embarked on an 18-7 run over the next six minutes to claim a 16-point lead, their largest of the first half, and entered the break up 45-31.

A trio of ASC starters joined Bustos with double-digits in the game, including senior Kendra Coveal (Albuquerque, N.M.), who posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and junior Kelsie Kruger (Alamosa, Colo.) who put in a career-best 21 points against the Spartans while going 9-of-13 from the field.

Sophomore Jamonica Hudgins (Albuquerque, N.M.) was the fourth Grizzly starter to reach double-digits with 10 points and was 2-for-3 from 3-point range in the game.
Aimee Reyzer also had a strong night for the Spartans, pouring in 16 points and grabbing a Dubuque-best five boards.

Adams State continued to pour it on in the second half, as a layup from senior Ruchelle McCracken (Frankston, Victoria, Australia) gave the Grizzlies a 30-point advantage with 6:47 left in the game. McCracken was one of three ASC players with 10 rebounds in the game and scored a season-high six points as well.

Turnovers continued to haunt the Grizzlies, who committed 27 in the game, but the Spartans managed to translate ASC miscues into just 11 points as the Grizzly defense held Dubuque to 27.1 percent (16-of-59) shooting in the game.

Next Friday the Grizzlies will be back in Pueblo, this time facing the ThunderWolves in both teams' Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) openers at 6 p.m.

The Grizzlies were 1-2 against CSU-Pueblo last winter, earning a 78-61 at Plachy Hall in their first meeting of the season, but falling 66-49 at Massari Arena on Feb. 12 and again in Plachy Hall on March 2 in the first round of the RMAC Shootout, 70-61.

Adams State will also face UC-Colorado Springs on the opening weekend of league play, travelling to Colorado Springs for a 6 p.m. match-up with the Mountain Lions on Saturday night.
