Arkansas Tech's Sarah Von Lienen named 2010 All-South Region Selection

LEXINGTON, Kentucky – Arkansas Tech senior middle blocker Sarah Von Lienen (Lakeland, Tenn.) continued to rake in the postseason honors on Wednesday afternoon as she was named to the 14-player AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) All-South Region Team.

Wednesday’s honor from the AVCA came on the same day that Von Lienen was named a Daktronics All-South Region honoree for the third consecutive year. After being a second team honoree in both 2008 and 2009, she earned first honors from Daktronics this season.

“What a nice postseason honor for Sarah. To be named one of the top 14 players from our region is huge, not only for her but for our program,” Golden Suns Head Volleyball Coach Kristy Bayer said. “She had a tremendous career and is one of the all-time great volleyball players in the school’s history and is very deserving of all the postseason accolades she’s received.”

Von Lienen was one of four Gulf South Conference player named either an All-South Region honoree or an Honorable Mention selection. Joining Von Lienen as All-Region Team selections was North Alabama senior middle blocker Sarah Roberts, while North Alabama’s junior duo of libero Lauren Greenhill and outside hitter Natalie Marsh were named honorable mention selections.

 On the season, Von Lienen, who was named the GSC West Division Player of the Year and was named a First-Team All-GSC West Division selection for the third consecutive season, earned AVCA All-South Region honors after leading the Golden Suns in kills (406), kills per set (3.76) and blocks (91) and she also hit .341 in 108 sets played. On the season, Von Lienen, who was named an Honorable Mention AVCA All-South Region selection as a sophomore in 2008, was named a GSC West Division Player of the Week three times and earned 14th weekly Player of the Week honors from the league in four-year Golden Sun career. She finished her career standing four on the school’s all-time kill chart (1,436), second on the career hitting percentage chart (.317) and second on the school’s Division II era chart (477). In addition, Von Lienen, who was named to the GSC All-Tournament Team this year, is fifth on the school’s career block chart and finished third in career double-figure kill matches with 73 and had eight career 20-plus kill matches, including recording 20 kills in Tech’s four-set loss to North Alabama in the GSC Tournament semifinals.  

In addition to Von Lienen, other AVCA South Region honorees included Barry senior right side hitter Ariadne Alcantara, Tampa senior outside hitter Kaleigh Cunningham, Tampa junior libero Julie Howlett, Florida Southern junior middle blocker Lauren Huber, Tampa senior middle blocker Sam Macks, Rollins College senior outside hitter Sarah Mendoza, Lynn University senior libero Lacy Redwine, Tampa sophomore middle blocker Danielle Selkridge, Tampa senior setter Meghan Sherman, Barry senior outside hitter Julia Teixeira, Tampa senior outside hitter Melissa Vanderhall and Lynn senior setter Devon Wollard.

Along with naming an All-South Region Team, the AVCA also named Rollins outside hitter Megan Hodges as the South Region Freshman of the Year and Tampa’s Chris Catanach as the South Region Coach of the Year.
