11th-Ranked Tritons Fall to Texas Woman’s University, 76-58

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Brooke Shepherd scored a game-high 23 points and Cambria Smith finished with 15 to lead Texas Woman’s University to a 76-58 victory over No. 11 UC San Diego on the second day of the Disney West Coast Tip Off Classic on Saturday at the Anaheim Convention Center.

TWU (1-1) bounced back after losing a 76-69 decision to Grand Canyon on Friday, while UCSD (0-2) dropped back-to-back games to open the season after falling to No. 13 Alaska Anchorage 74-62 on the tournament’s opening day.

The Pioneers shot 45% (26-57) from the field and connected on 9-of-17 from the three-point line, while the Tritons struggled from the floor, finishing at just 25% (18-72). UCSD held a 50-40 rebounding advantage, but TWU won the battle in the paint, 28-16 and forced the Tritons into 18 turnovers.

Shepherd was 8-of-15 from the field, including 6-of-8 on threes, to lead three players in double figures for the Pioneers. Jessica Hanna added 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Jeanee’ Thompson tallied nine points and 11 boards.

Daisy Feder scored 14 points to lead the way for UCSD, while Lauren Freidenberg finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Osga tallied six points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Junior All-American Chelsea Carlisle struggled from the floor for the second game in a row, finishing with just nine points on 3-for-17 shooting, but she did contribute nine rebounds and three assists. The Agoura Hills native was just 3-of-10 for six points in Friday’s loss to UAA.

The Triton starters were a combined 13-for-56 from the field on Saturday, 23%.

TWU jumped out to a 12-5 lead after seven minutes of play, as UCSD missed eight of its first nine shots. The Pioneers pushed the lead to 17-7 on a Shepherd three, before the Tritons scored seven straight points to cut the deficit to three.

Texas Woman’s led 27-19 following another three from Shepherd with just under five minutes remaining, but UCSD closed the half on a 12-4 run to tie the game at 31 all at the break. Feder scored six points during the stretch.

The Tritons took a 42-41 lead on a jumper by Osga five and a half minutes into the second period, but the Pioneers answered with 12 straight points to assume control for good, as Shepherd and Hanna combined to hit three consecutive triples.

UCSD closed to within 53-49 with 7:56 left to play, but back-to-back baskets by Tabbatha Thurmond and Kayla Weaver pushed the lead to eight, and Shepherd’s sixth three-pointer of the game made it 64-53 with 4:29 remaining. TWU took its biggest lead of 18 at the final horn.

The Tritons will look to bounce back against Grand Canyon in the Disney Classic finale on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The Antelopes lost a 63-55 decision to Alaska Anchorage in the first game of the day on Saturday.
