TURLOCK — Going out with a bang, the Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team finished the 2010 season on a positive note upsetting No. 13 Chico State, 1-0, on senior night at Warrior Stadium.
In a match with few shots taken by either side, the Warriors came out on up with a late score to finish their second straight winning season with 9-5-4 overall and 8-5-3 CCAA records. They wrapped up the season with an impressive 8-2-1 record in games at Warrior Stadium.
Saturday night's win was also the Warriors' second over a ranked opponent this season. Earlier in the year, CSUS beat Sonoma State when it was ranked No. 23.
Chico State, winner of the CCAA North Division, ends the regular season 13-5, 11-5 CCAA. The Wildcats are returning here to Turlock for the conference tournament next week. Chico, however, will be out two starting defenders on Friday.
For Cal State Stanislaus, Juan Alvarez knocked in a loose ball in front of the net in the 76th minute to give the Warriors the game-winner. Arturo Pulido had sent in the ball from the far side at Chico goalie Sam Evans, who knocked the ball around that ended up by Alvarez. It was Alvarez's second goal of the season.
Chico State was playing a man down since 54:34 when Evan Johnston received a yellow card and on his way off the field as Chico tried to put in a substitute player, he picked up a red card. Wildcats' Leo Zarate also picked up a red card in the final minute of the match. Both Johnston and Zarate will be ineligble for Friday's contest.
The Warriors took advantage and took control of the possessions between the boxes. They also had the advantage in corner shots, 7-3.
In 2010, Stanislaus set two team records with 38 assists and 106 points on the season. They were just two shy of the team record in goals scored with 34 (the team had 36 in 1998).
Prior to Saturday's contest, five Warriors -- Iber Monroy, John Powell, Victor Regalado, Hector Angeles and Terry Gross -- were recognized for playing in their final collegiate match.
