Women's Soccer: Clan Move Into Second in GNAC
Lauren Lachlan scored after a free kick with 4:57 remaining as Simon Fraser edged Montana State Billings 1-0 Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Billings.
The win enabled SFU (9-4-2, 8-3-2) to move into second place in the GNAC two points ahead of the third-place Yellowjackets (11-5-1, 8-5-0).
In other games, Western Washington,Western Oregon and Seattle Pacific also recorded shutout victories.
The Vikings (10-4-3, 7-4-2) defeated Northwest Nazarene 5-0 as Claire Morgan had a pair of goals and an assist.
Western Oregon (3-14-0, 2-11-0) blanked Central Washington 4-0 behind a six-point performance by Kym Witmer.
Seattle Pacific (14-1-2, 11-1-1), fresh off clinching the GNAC title on Thursday, shut out Saint Martin's 3-0.
Lachlan's goal, which was her fourth of the season, came off one of only four shots by Simon Fraser against the MSU Billings defense.
The play began with a free kick by Jessica Fleming from the far side into the box.
As a huge pile formed in front of the net, Lachlan came from the back side to just get enough of the ball to squeak it past MSUB keeper Sabrina Grandke-Bawab.
The Yellowjackets, who had a 7-2 corner kick advantage, launched 10 shots, but Clan keeper Amelia Ng had four saves to record her ninth shutout and lower her GAA to 0.52.
Western Washington 5, Northwest Nazarene 0
Morgan, who has eight goals and eight assists on the season, took over sole possession of WWU's school's career assist record in the Vikings' win at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
Joana Houplin also had a goal and assist as Western Washington snapped a two-game losing streak.
WWU scored four times in the second half. “Claire had a big contribution from the midfield,” Viking coach Travis Connell said.
Morgan scored the game's first goal with eight minutes to go in the first half, stealing the ball at midfield and rocketing in a shot from 20 yards.
Four minutes into the second half, Molly Shannon made it 2-0, scoring off a volley from Morgan, who became the Vikings' sole leader in career assists with 27, snapping a three-way tie.
Late in the game, Western scored three goals in a span of just over 10 minutes against the Crusaders (5-12-0, 3-10-0).
Justina MacDowell tapped in a cross from Houplin in the 79th minute, Morgan scored from 16 yards in the 82nd minute and Alicia Patten slotted a through ball to Houplin, who ran the field and beat the keeper with a minute to go.
WWU goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs picked up her GNAC-leading 10th shutout of the season, making four saves.
Western Oregon 4, Central Washington 0
Witmer scored twice and also had two assists to key a four-goal second half explosion for the Wolves, who had scored just seven times in 12 previous conference contests.
Meanwhile, Kelsie Blachly had five saves to record her first shutout of the season and the second of the year for the Wolves.
Witmer had just two points on the season prior to the contest, but earned her first assist on a goal by Marina Austin at 54:12, then added a pair of unassisted goals at 57:01 and 64:34.
Kelsey Herrick then closed the scoring at 78:01 on a double-assist by Witmer and Rachelle Kliewer.
The shots were virtually even for the contest, with the Wolves having a narrow 15-14 advantage. Central (4-11-2, 4-8-1) took six of the game's nine corners. CWU keeper Kori Butterfield was credited with seven saves.
Seattle Pacific 3, Saint Martin's 0
Seattle Pacific got first-half goals from Andrea Chan and Taylor Sawyer en route to a 3-0 victory at Interbay Stadium.
Freshman Kellie Zakrzewski set up the Falcons' first goal breaking free on the left side and dribbling toward the post before sliding a pass across the goalmouth that Chan tapped in at 14:52.
A corner kick set up the second goal at 28:07. Kelsey Jenkins served the ball into the center of the box and Megan Lindsay headed it to the right post where a Saints defender cleared it off the line.
Sawyer then ran to the loose ball and booted it from inside the six-yard box.
Lindsay netted her team-leading 10th goal – including her seventh in the last five games - less than three minutes into the second half.
Jenkins took a corner kick that rattled between players in the goalmouth before Lindsay spun and sent an eight-yard strike into the left side of the goal at 47:48.
Goalkeepers Maddie Dickinson, who had two saves, and Brooke Yokers combined for SPU's 10th shutout of the season.
Meanwhile, Gina Cardenas was credited with five saves for the Saints (7-10-0, 6-7-0), who had just one fewer attempt than the Falcons (9-8).
