Men’s Hoops Hosts Courtyard by Marriott Holiday Classic December 18-19

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University’s men’s basketball team hosts its annual Courtyard by Marriott Holiday Classic this weekend with the University of Indianapolis, West Florida and Sunshine State Conference rival Barry coming to town.

The Fighting Knights take on the Argonauts on Saturday, December 18 and the Greyhounds on Sunday, December 19.  Both games will be 7 pm starts while Barry takes on the same two teams, in reverse order, in 5 pm starts.

LU (2-6, 0-1 SSC) is coming off a pair of disappointing losses last week to Palm Beach Atlantic and Eckerd.  Wing players Jimmy Gaskins and Jovan Robinson were bright spots for Lynn as Gaskins averaged a double-double for the week on 12.5 points and 11 rebounds in the two games.  Robinson scored a season-high 16 points against PBA and followed up with nine points and a season-high six assists against the Tritons.

Winners of its last two games, West Florida comes into the week at 3-5 and will face Columbus State on December 15 prior to its showdown with the Fighting Knights.  Mike Lewis, a five-foot-eight guard from Upper Marlboro, Md., leads the Argos with 15.8 ppg.  Jamar Moore is second on the squad in scoring at 14.9 and leads the team with 7.0 rpg and just over three assists per game.  Off the bench, UWF is led by Anthony Sims at 7.3 ppg and 6.4 rpg.  Lynn is 3-0 all-time against West Florida and won last season’s meeting, 74-67, in Pensacola.

Indianapolis got a lot of attention in the preseason after defeating Division I Tennessee, 79-64, in exhibition play on November 8.  Since then, the Greyhounds have opened the regular season at 5-2 and have won their last two games.  Darius Adams, who scored 27 points in the exhibition win over the Vols, is averaging 20.3 points per game.  After missing a few games to open the season, big-man Wilbur O’Neal is also a viable option and is averaging 19.8 points in four games while shooting 73% from the field.  DeWann Squires and Adrian Moss are also scoring threats as Squires puts up 11.4 ppg and a team-high 4.7 rebounds while Moss scores 10.9 points and averages nearly five assists a game.  This is the first time these teams will meet since December 20, 2002, when the Greyhounds were victorious 75-70, in Boca.  Lynn defeated the ‘Hounds, 94-85, in the other previous meeting on November 26, 1999.

BU is currently 2-5 and 0-1 in the SSC and will not take on Lynn until Saturday, January 22, in Miami Shores.  Evan White and Willie Whitfield lead the Bucs with 14.7 and 14.6 ppg, respectively.  Whitfield is also dominant on the glass averaging 11.3 rebounds a contest.  Zack Trapp is also averaging in double figures with 12.7 ppg and has been on fire from long distance, shooting 47.8% from behind the arc.  Lynn won both regular season games between the bitter rivals last year before falling to the Bucs in the SSC Tournament, 58-56.  LU is 20-18 all-time against Barry.
