GBC Men’s Basketball Clashes With Crosstown Rival Tonight

PIKE CREEK, Del. – The only two Division II men’s basketball teams in the state of Delaware meet tonight at 8 p.m. in the Joseph West Jones Center as Goldey-Beacom College hosts crosstown rival Wilmington University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference showdown.

The Lightning began conference play this past Wed. with a tough loss at division foe, Philadelphia University. They will attempt to rebound from that loss in front of what should be a packed Jones Center tonight.

For fans who cannot make the game, there will be a free live webcast via PennAtlantic that is available by using the link on the calendar on the right of the website. Announcer Chris DiGiacomo will have the call.

Thus far, GBC has been led by seniors Sam McDuffie and Terrence Parkes. McDuffie, a 6-foot-5 guard/forward leads the team and ranks second in the conference in scoring at 20.7 points per-game. Parkes, a 6-foot-6 forward in his second season at Goldey-Beacom after transferring from Division I Delaware State, ranks sixth in the league in scoring (18.2 ppg) and third in rebounding (8.8 rpg). McDuffie and Parkes combined for 41 of the Lightning’s 55 points in the loss on Wed. night.

Meanwhile, Wilmington comes in with a record of 3-3 and won its CACC opener on Wed. night on the road at Holy Family, 81-70. The Wildcats feature four scorers in double-figures, including the team scoring leader, 6-0 sophomore guard Isiah Mason, who averages 14.3 points per-game. Robert Owens, a 6-foot-5 sophomore forward leads the team in rebounding with 7.7 boards per-game and also averages 10.3 points per-contest.

Dating back to 2002-03, GBC has a distinct 14-3 series lead and is 13-2 against the Wildcats under head coach Chuck Hammond. The Lightning are also 7-2 against their in-state rival at the Jones Center and have won the last three meetings on their home floor.

The last time these two teams met was when GBC hosted Wilmington in last year’s CACC quarterfinals on Mar. 1, 2010. Senior guard Kyle White helped the Lightning erase a 38-30 halftime deficit by exploding for 21 second-half points, and GBC went on to win 79-71.
