Grand Canyon’s Ciliento repeats as Player of the Year

Art U picks up Coach, Newcomer honors; NDNU’s Garcia tabbed as top rookie

PHOENIX, AZ – For the second consecutive season, the coaches of the Pacific West Conference have selected Grand Canyon sophomore forward Kyle Ciliento (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) as the PacWest Player of the Year.

The announcement of the award and the rest of the All-PacWest Team came during the PacWest Magazine, The Radio Show broadcast on Tuesday, Nov. 9, from Honolulu.

The Arizona native will lead the Antelopes into the NCAA II post-season this weekend as Grand Canyon makes a run at a national title.

Ciliento dominated the PacWest offensively, producing 55 points on 25 goals and five assists. He ranks first in total points, points per game (3.06), goals and goals per game (1.39). He is tied for sixth in assists, tied for seventh in assists per game (0.28), and leads the league in game-winning goals with eight. He has 21 more points and 12 more goals than the runner-up in the conference.

Ciliento was one of 35 All-PacWest selections after earning First Team honors, and he claimed one of the five top awards presented by the conference.

His teammate, senior goalkeeper Ben Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia), was named the 2010 PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year and All-PacWest First Team for the second consecutive season. Paneccasio played every minute of every game in net for the Antelopes so far in 2010, recording a 14-2-2 overall mark while helping lead Grand Canyon to a PacWest Championship.

He posted a 0.70 goals against average and a .723 save percentage while recording 34 stops (1.89 per game). He is ranked third in save percentage, stands second in goals against average, and leads the conference in shutouts (10).

Academy of Art collected two of the remaining three awards in the PacWest thanks to junior forward Andrew Cruz (Pleasanton, CA/Foothill), who was named the PacWest Newcomer of the Year, and Urban Knight mentor Daniel Rosaia, who was selected the PacWest Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year.

Cruz totaled 17 points this season on eight goals and one assists. He is ranked ninth in the PacWest in total points and ninth in points per game (0.94), while he is tied for fourth in goals scored and in goals per game (0.44). He also was named All-PacWest Second Team for his outstanding season.

Rosaia led the Urban Knights on a tremendous turnaround in 2010. In 2009, Academy of Art finished its first season in the PacWest with a last-place mark of 1-13 and an overall record of 4-15-1. This season, the Urban Knights finished fifth in the PacWest with a 7-7 conference mark and an 8-10 overall record. They ended the year with three straight victories.

Notre Dame de Namur rookie forward Armando Garcia (Redwood City, CA/Sequoia) claimed the PacWest Freshman of the Year honor. He amassed 21 points on nine goals and three assists and is ranked third in the league in total points, points per game (1.31), total goals and goals per game (0.56) in the PacWest. He was named All-PacWest Second Team.

Garcia’s teammate, sophomore Cristobal Montes (Fremont, CA/John F. Kennedy), earned All-PacWest First Team for the third straight year. In 2008 he was named the PacWest Player and Newcomer of the Year.

The veteran forward posted 20 points on eight goals and four assists. He is tied for fourth in points, tied for fifth in points per game (1.11), tied for fourth in goals, and tied for fourth in goals per game (0.44). He is tied for third in game-winning goals with four.

In all, the Argos earned seven All-PacWest selections this season, including three First Team choices. Junior middie Christian Rosales (Redwood City, CA/St. Francis) earned First Team honors for the first time in his career. He was an Honorable Mention as a rookie in 2008 and claimed Second Team accolades in 2009.

He helped the Argos to a 13-3-2 overall record and a 10-2-2 mark in the PacWest by contributing eight points on two goals and four assists. He is tied for 10th in the PacWest in total assists with four.

Junior midfielder Arturo Gomez (San Diego, CA/Castle Park) picked up a Second Team award after taking home First Team honors last season. He recorded a dozen points this season on five goals and two assists and was credited with a pair of game-winners.

Senior Oswaldo Hernandez (Jalisco, Mexico) was named First Team Defense, while senior Phillip Hoog (Munich, Germany) earned Second Team Defense. Both players started all 18 games this year for the Argos, while Hernandez contributed one assist on offense.

Junior goalie Isiah Castro (Watsonville, CA/Watsonville) was named to the Second Team for his outstanding season in the cage. He is leading the PacWest in goals against average (0.47) and save percentage (.854), and tied for second in shutouts (7).

Grand Canyon led the PacWest in All-Conference selections this year with 10. In addition to Ciliento and Paneccasio, senior Joao Vieira (Amparo, Brazil) and junior Cordero Young (Orlando, FL/Central Florida Christian Academy) claimed First Team honors, while junior Mitchell Garcia (Avondale AZ/Agua Fria) and senior Harvey Martinez (Miami, FL/Coral Gables) collected Second Team and Honorable Mention accolades, respectively. All four earned the awards as midfielders.

Young recorded 19 points on eight goals and three assists with a trio of game-winners. He is ranked seventh in points and in points per game (1.06), and is tied for fourth in goals and goals per game (0.44).

Vieira, who had an Honorable Mention award last year, totaled eight points this season on one goal and six assists. He presently stands tied for fourth in total assists in the conference and is fifth in assists per game (0.35).

Garcia has accrued 13 points on three goals and seven assists with one game-winner. He is tied for second in total assists and in assists per game (0.39) in the PacWest. Martinez has seven points on five assists and a goal and is tied for sixth in total assists in the PacWest.

On defense, junior Maximilian Aust (Pliezhausen, Germany) earned All-PacWest First Team honors, while junior Nick Sykes (Boise, ID/Mountain View) was named Second Team. Sophomore Chris Green (Phoenix, AZ/Thunderbird) claimed Honorable Mention.

Aust contributed one goal this season – it was a game-winner – while Green had an assist in 18 games. Sykes, who earned All-PacWest Honorable Mention in 2008 and First Team in 2009, started all 18 games so far this season for Grand Canyon.

Senior Pat Perkins (Bremerton, WA/Bremerton), who was an Honorable Mention at forward last year, repeated as an Honorable Mention this year thanks to his 16 points on seven goals and two assists. He is tied for 10th in points and tied for ninth in goals in the PacWest heading into the post-season.

Academy of Art totaled four All-PacWest selections in 2010. In addition to Cruz, freshman Patrick Heinemann (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany) was named Honorable Mention at forward and rookie Andrew Durano (Portland, OR/Jesuit) was an Honorable Mention at midfield. Sophomore goalie Ian Sutherland (Honolulu, HI/Assets) also claimed Honorable Mention accolades.

Heinemann totaled five points on a goal and four assists this season and is tied for 10th in the league in total helpers. Sutherland, meanwhile, is ranked fourth in goals against average (1.29), fourth in save percentage (.722), fifth in saves per game (3.55), eighth in total saves (39) and tied for fourth in shutouts (3).

Durano totaled seven assists and finished the season with seven points. He is tied for second in total assists and in assists per game (0.39) in the league.

Dominican (CA) junior midfielder Pedro Guevara (Santa Rosa, CA/Montgomery) made the jump from Second Team in 2009 to First Team this year thanks to a stellar campaign. He totaled 20 points on eight goals and four assists and is tied for fourth in total points and tied for fifth in points per game (1.11). He also is tied for fourth in total goals and in goals per contest (0.44), and is tied for 10th in the league in total assists. He recorded two of the three game-winners posted by the Penguins this year.

Senior defender Alex Ziegler (Eureka, CA/Montgomery) repeated as a member of the All-PacWest team after picking up an Honorable Mention this year. He was named Second Team in 2009. This season he totaled five points on two goals and an assist.

Dixie State earned a trio of All-PacWest selections, beginning with sophomore Jordan Roylance (Smithfield, UT/Sky View) who was a Second Team choice this year and a First Team selection in 2009. Roylance led the Red Storm in scoring with 18 points on eight goals and two assists. He is tied for eighth in total points and is ranked alone in eighth place in points per game (1.00). He also is tied for fourth in goals and in goals per game (0.44), while his four game-winners has him tied for third in the PacWest.

Junior middie Nyle Ortiz (Layton, UT/Layton) was named to the Second Team after producing 11 points on four goals and three assists with one game-winner. Sophomore defender Robby Astin (Hayden, ID/Coeur d’Alene) repeated as an Honorable Mention. He scored a goal and finished with two points from his back position this year.

Hawai‘i Pacific’s late-season surge landed the Sea Warriors in second place in the PacWest with an 11-3 conferece record and a 12-6 overall mark. HPU won its last five games to set a good tone for 2010.

The success in the standings translated to six All-PacWest selections this year, including a third straight First Team honor for junior forward Chance Bukoski (Lihue, HI/Kapaa). One of the premier players in the conference, Bukoski posted 34 points on 13 goals and eight assists. He ranks second in total points, game-winners (5), scoring (2.12), goals scored and goals per game (0.81). He topped the league in assists and in assists per game (0.50).

Junior Richard Guffens (Leiden, Netherlands) picked up All-PacWest Second Team accolades at forward thanks to a strong campaign that produced 20 points on seven goals and six assists. He is tied for fourth in points, ranks fourth in points per game (1.25), is tied for ninth in goals, and ranks ninth in goals per game (0.44). He also is tied for fourth in assists and stands alone in fourth place with a 0.38 assists-per-game average. Guffens finished the year with a pair of game-winning goals.

HPU rookie George Fochive (Lycee Godefroy de Bouillon) made the All-PacWest Second Team as a midfielder, while sophomore Kimo Komomua (Honolulu, HI/Kamhameha Schools) earned an Honorable Mention at the position. Komomua had nine points on four goals and one assist with a pair of game-winners, while Fochive posted 10 points on four goals and two helpers with one game-winner.

HPU sophomore defender Kainoa Kahui (Honolulu, HI/Kamhameha Schools) made his All-PacWest debut with a First Team selection, while senior Nathan Scott (Phoenix, AZ/Sandra Day O’Connor) repeated as a Second Team choice. Kahui had four goals with one assist for a nine-point season, while Scott had six points on four assists and a goal. Kahui was credited with a game-winner.

BYU-Hawaii senior middie Viktor Bezhani (Tirana, Albania) was the lone Seasider named All-PacWest after taking Honorable Mention accolades this season. He led the Seasiders in points (12) and goals (6), was a perfect 4 for 4 on penalty kicks, and was credited with one game-winner.

Hawai‘i Hilo picked up a pair of All-PacWest selections at forward, including senior Drew Geis (Honolulu, HI/Kapolei) who became a four-time First Team selection. Geis earned his previous awards in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

This season he totaled 16 points on seven goals and two assists, leaving him currently tied for 10th in scoring and alone in 10th in points per game (0.94). He also is tied for ninth in goals and ranks 10th in goals per game (0.41).

Vulcan sophomore forward Cameron Castillo (Mountain View, HI/Kamehameha-Hawaii) picked up an Honorable Mention award for his solid season. He had three assists in 17 games that featured 16 starts.
